I'm currently in transition in a WTB unit and was told by the company 1SG that I can not wear my diamond while in the WTB. I am still the 1SG of my unit and have not had a change-of-responsibility. I have researched AR 40-58 (WTB Reg) and some other regs but can not find anything that mandates this diamond removal. I feel as though this is more of a personal issue for the company 1SG versus an Army mandated policy. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hypothetically, if they have administrative authority over you while there.
First Sergeants are kind of like highlanders - there can be only one.

1SG check your orders promoting you to 1SG. To remove the rank of 1SG REQUIRES a new order removing your 5M skill identifier.

1SG (Join to see) - Well, a lateral appointment anyway. Basic qualifier is whether or not the WTU has ADCON.

Oh the 1SG is Female. Be careful, Top. Me Too and all that shit, ya know. You might look the wrong way and then bam! Speaking from experience having encountered insecure power tripping Females in position of authority trying to make a point before.

What is your rank and duty position?
Are you TDY to the WTU, or have you been reassigned?
You didn't just pin on 1SG rank when assigned to the position, and I'm not certain you have the authority to laterally appoint yourself from 1SG to MSG.
I'm certain that 1SG isn't the lateral appointment authority, though.
If the 1SG wants that to happen, he should submit paperwork to have it done.
I suggest requesting an appointment with the first CSM in the WTU NCOSC to request clarification.

I think this hits the nail on the head. Your orders will state the reason for this assignment and the rank you hold. 1SG is a rank associated with a duty position, you recieve orders to that affect and thats the rank you hold until your duty position changes and you recieve new orders.

I agree completely. If you are still in that duty appointed position, and still on the UMR for your unit as a 1SG, then you retain the diamond.

If you are no longer the 1SG on the UMR then someone needs to make sure you have orders latterallybtransfering your position on the UMR to an appropriate position and authorizing the rank of MSG.

I would hazard a guess that as long as your are still assigned to your unit back home you are still their 1SG. You were laterally appointed 1SG by your commander as long as he is still your commander then its his perogative. This is one of the situations where you have to weigh the cost of wearing your rightful rank agains negative attention from folks who control your short term career. Things may go easier if you just throw MSG rank on and get off the radar. This is just me and I am a bit of an asshole but I would respectfully tell the WTC 1SG thanks for your suggestion I will take it under advisement. I am a retired 1SG and I wear my Uniform with my 1SG rank all the time while at activities with the unit 1SG there and have never had an issue. While its very rare to have 1SG's at WTC back when I worked a MOB platform I saw at least 2 attached to the WTC's and the unit 1SG's had zero issues with them wearing their rank. I don't know the whole story but I would guess the WTC has some kind of uncalled for issue with anyone but him/her wearing the diamond in his unit.

SGM Erik Marquez sounds good but if you are reassigned as a patient there is no argument for any of it. Boils down to who he is actually assigned to. He may not even be aware that he is assigned as a patient.

You are a 1SG until you are officially not a 1SG of that unit. Once you are no longer assigned to your unit as the 1SG, you will get ORDERS which will change you to MSG, until then you must wear the 1SG rank.

Any 1SG worth their salt no matter where they are is still doing the job. In these days of cell phones, e-mail and videos you can be in a WTB unit still manage to do your job for which your commander is very happy. I will pose this question as a 1SG you deploy forward with your unit and your troops are either OPCON/TACON to another unit for the deployment but you your commander and maybe one or two troops have a HQ in the AO. Would you no longer be the 1SG for those Soldiers and would you have 100% trust in the supported unit taking care of your attachments? As a mobbed Reservist attached to an AD unit in the box and having seen what happened to another company that was attached to a different unit I would never relinquish my responsibility. When my unit was released back to the demob station "ALL" of my Soldiers and Officers were squared away both with their evaluations and all administrative documents. Also I had minimal issues resulting from abandoning my troops to others. I made sure that the entire time that everything was being done so that they didn't suffer. A sister company trusted in the unit they were attached to for doing everything like a parent unit should do. Months after the deployment there were still missing OER's, NCOER's and awards and I won't even go into the assorted screwed up documentation that was never corrected or recovered for them. As a 1SG your commander determines when you are no longer his/her 1SG. We all know our job tends to be 24 x7 and reach across many miles to make it all happen.

I think that we have a weak First Sergeant concerned with his own status and perceived authority. We all tend to be cocky dealing with outsiders, and unfortunately, these situations where we are assigned administratively somewhere but will really assigned somewhere else as the First Sergeant really can seem weird. If you're First Sergeant of a company with a bunch of attached or TDY First Sergeants, it's a fairly limited position. So, be polite, and decide if you want to win or you want your life to work. Then act accordingly.
I know that for me, the greatest reward of being TOP was that there were a limited number of idiots who could make me do something stupid. Therefore, once I became a First Sergeant and had the identifier, I tried like hell to never take it off again.
