Oval backing on Dress Uniform for Ball, worn or removed?

I must be confused. I thought the oval backing and other items were removed on the Dress Uniform?

When in doubt, it’s at the Commander’s discretion. AR670-1 states if in a designated airborne/air assault unit it is approved for where on the dress uniform. Now the dress mess is different since it’s miniature medals. I’ve never seen flashes for those CSM (Join to see)

AR 670-1 11-2. b. (3). Dress. All components are worn; the bowtie is substituted for the necktie.
