Hey guys Im new to this forum so i hope im doing this right. I am currently seeking advice/ opinions about WOCS/OCS/Flight school. so heres my situation: I just graduated college this May and was originally seeking a job in the civilian world but have really been feeling led to join the military and have really been interested in getting on track to become a pilot. I have a tech. degree in aviation technology and a Bachelors in Business Admin. GPA is 3.37 (i know that isn't competitive) so heres my deal. deciding on Guard or Active, and OCS vs WOCS. and if guard then what state(will have better chance of a civ job outside Ms) i also was just told that the Guard doesn't do street to seat for WOCS like Active duty does.(i have a guard recruiter getting back to me about that). I have also been told mulitple times by recent Active duty OCS grads that you DO NOT compete for pilot slots at OCS, that you go in with pilot by your name and you are designated as that. Any Warrant officers, recent OCS or WOCS grads that can offer advice? in the Mean time im studying for the SIFT and ASVAB.

Decide what you want to do. If your goal is to be an aviator and for the most part only an aviator then being a Warrant Officer is the way to go. If you want to lead and command, yet also have the opportunity to fly then going OCS is the better option. If you have other questions let me know and I will help where I can.

Thank you, i really appreciate the response. at first i was dead set on OCS due to the leadership aspect and the variety of tasks required by the job. that was also before i even really knew what WOCS was. I started learning more about WOCS and it just seemed like EVERYONE told me it was the best way to go and was "the best kept secret" of the Army. I like that it seems that the Warrant community is very tight knit. As far as flying goes i love aviation, but have actually never flown in a helo, only in fixed wings. i would love to fly but also want a little leadership required of my job as well. and thank you, i def have some questions so i appreciate you offering to give advice!

You are correct in that you still have to hit the officer career path stuff like staff time, commands, etc and sometimes flying takes a back seat to that. I even have some friends who went from RLO to Warrant because they really wanted to fly. Unless OCS has changed since I went, you still compete for branch slotting including Aviation. Only difference is you will have your flight physical done before you start because on day one, they will ask if anyone is planning to compete for Infantry or Aviation so they can knock out flight and airborne physicals. Like I said though, that was when I went 11 years ago.

that was my understanding until i had a guy who went last year swear up and down to me that it wasn't the case. of course he didn't branch aviation though so idk. Im not worried about competing so much as to just knowing what the deal is before i choose a path.

If you plan on being strictly a pilot, I would recommend going Warrant. That is the sole job of a Aviation Warrant. I can’t generally speak for officers, but I believe at one point in their career flying is a very rare occasion. Like I said I could be wrong on that.

thanks for your response! yea thats exactly what i have heard, and was leaning toward going Warrant in the guard until today when read online and was told in person that WOCS for non prior enlisted wad an active duty option only. I have heard nothing but great things about Warrant Officers and would love to have to opportunity to attend WOCS
