Promotions to E5 and E6 are semi-centralized. You will submit a packet through your CoC. BN S1 compiles the approved packets and conducts the board. Note you will not attend a physical board. Available positions are based on mileage you are willing to travel to drill from your home of record. For my E5 board, another soldier got promoted because she was willing to travel a farther distance ... it was 10mi farther than I said I was willing to travel. Moral of the story, points aren’t as important in the reserves, but be ready to put down 250mi on your preference if you are in a competitive MOS and looking for a difficult to come by spot.

Your unit will have a list of required items in what order, but all require the following: DA3355 (point worksheet), your latest DA705 (PT), your latest DA3595-R (marksmanship), your DA1059 from ALC and DA87 from SSD2, last 3 NCOERs, Awards, and any transcripts from your civilian education. Basically, everything in your I Love Me Folder

The willingness to drive many miles is a big key. It's that your willing to accept promotion to a slot that may be that far away. Remember after 12 months you. Can transfer to a legitimate slot in a unit closer to home. Another unique factor in the Reserves the more MOSs that one has the better opportunity for advancement and finding slots closer to home!

Depends on if your MOS is a critical one or there is an open slot.

I was on the list within 4 months and selected 2 months later. Waited a year to complete ALC, then got pinned

How long after completing alc did you have to wait to pin Ssg?

I was pinned the following drill weekend. I'm on COMET so things are a little different. Your effective date will be graduation day though

So, you're able to submit a promotion packet for E6 without ALC completed? And if selected I'm guessing that'll put you at the top of the list for ALC attendance?

You can submit your packet after completing SSD2. If you are selected, you will not get pinned until you complete ALC
