Would there happen to be any current or retired Colonels/General Officers here?

I'm working on a leadership project that would involve the participation of O-6+ members, ideally of more than one branch. This project is currently in its infancy, and I'd greatly appreciate advice and input. Information below:

Goal: To inspire - in all ranks - a confidence and fierce desire to unleash their potential to achieve greatness; to build exponential momentum toward that greatness, and never lose it.

Theme: A panel of up to five O-6+ leaders sitting on stage, engaging in candid discussion and sharing ideas with each other and the audience on the topic of transformational leadership, and overall self-improvement - not just in their professional careers, but in their everyday lives. The event would be open to all branches (joint base), and all ranks.

The atmosphere would be different than what troops have become accustomed to. This would allow troops to see the O-6+ members not so much as high ranking individuals, but as flesh-and-blood human beings who have made extraordinary accomplishments in their lives - accomplishments which are entirely obtainable by anyone willing to accept failure as an inevitable obstacle to success, rather than an impenetrable brick wall.

My willingness to accept possible failure is evident in my ambition to see this project come to fruition.

Questions for Leaders:

1. What is/was your most powerful tool for inspiring your troops?

2. How would you go about accomplishing the goal of this project?

3. How would you measure the efficacy of the project?

4. If you were to participate in such a panel, what details would be most important to you?

E.g:
4a. How many attendees would you expect?
4b. Would you be open to the UOD being optional Business Casual or Duty Uniforms?
4c. If I were to ask you to participate: in what way could I ask that would arouse the values you've developed over the years in your personal and professional lives?
4d. What other vital topics/subtopics should be added?
etc...

5. What other questions should I be asking?

Again, this project is in its infancy. So I've got a lot of work to do before I present it to anyone in my chain of command. If you've got other ideas on how to make this a high-value project, please share them. All input would be invaluable to this project!

Thank you in advance for taking the time to offer your advice.

1. Know what your Soldiers need know or need to know and show up on the ground, in the worst possible conditions to let them know you have their back and you understand what they are doing for the team.
2. What's the intended audience and what are you trying to tell them. Once you know that you will need to get your requirements and resources matched up to make it happen.

3. The answer here depends on what you've said about question 2. Certainly you can collect and categorize qualitative data but again you need to understand why you are doing this and that message needs to be made clear to all participants as well as to the audience.
4. UOD is probably best civilian attire, in terms of what's important, that message is told from the beginning. If your rationale is sound and your purpose could benefit others and be a learning environment, then it could be successful. The tricky part in an endeavor such as this is the logistics needed to get it done. Lots of detailed planning whether its live or virtual (both would work).
5. Transformational leadership can take many forms so you will need to narrow your focus a bit on the exact research question you are asking. Leaving it overly broad will get a lot of pontification and enable your panel to stray from the objective.
Good Luck!

1): I would say that my most "powerful tool" for inspiring my troops would have to be HONESTY.
2): To accomplish the goal of this or any project, explain in as much detail as necessary to answer any & all questions.
3): Referring to question #1, I am not sure just how to measure the efficacy of the project.
4a): With a decent lead time of advance notice about the project, I would hope to see a "full house", especially if questions are allowed from the floor.
4b): Since the project is in essence a military tribunal, I would prefer the participants wear uniforms, not necessarily Class A, but BU's or even duty clothing (such as pilots, AP's. firemen, etc). I feel that seeing a panel of O6's & higher in "everyday" uniform would bring a closer feeling to the Enlisted.
4d): Some other vital topics could be Responsibility to Your Men; The Necessity of Knowing the Truth; The Importance of The Mission; Working Together As A Team.

5): Maybe another question could be about Striving to Be Most Knowledgeable about your career field.

To take on a project of this magnaitude and bring it to fruitation is a time consuming work. I wish you the best with your project and its success.

Thank you, Sir! I’ve got the determination to make it happen, I just need to ensure I’ve got everything in order before I try to get local leadership on board.
