As a 2LT I remember seeing this vehicle outside the U.S. Army Armor and Engineer Board at Ft Know and asking myself - why did we not produce this? Thoughts?

Looks like a highly modified M551 Sheridan hull with a different turret and main gun. At least the tracks and the suspension are the same. The Sheridan weighed 17 tons and had a 152mm gun that you could also fire the Shillelagh infra-red guided rocket out of. Real joy to pull the trigger on that gun...NOT!

That's me in the loaders hatch at Baum / St. Vith Range at Ft Knox for Table 8 qualification. We were the last Calvary Officer Basic Course for Sheridans. You are correct in that firing that 152mm Main Gun was areal experience. The XM800T was designed and proposed by FMC as an improvement over the M-113 and M-114. I still believe that it was a good design. However, the M2/3 BFV took its place.

Eh, It looks cool, but that is about all. The M3A3 BFV obviously took over for good reason; far more capabilities. It may be a heavier little sucker, but it wields a larger main gun (25mm, as opposed to this one's 20mm), dual TOW missile launcher, and enough space in the back for a squad of dismounts. As a scout that spent most of his days in an ACR, I loved my bradley.

Good question, also why did they move armor from Knox, seemed a bit silly to me. I used to love all the old armor they had on display around that post.

Unfortunately BRAC 2005 determined that the Armor and Infantry Schools should be co-located and although Knox had/has far more ranges capable of supporting all weapons systems and better maneuvering space, Benning "won out" over Knox and in 2011 the Armor Center and Armor Schools moved to Benning and the new Maneuver Center of Excellence.
