I do not have a horse in this race, but...

Prior to going to sea during the Cold War, the "magazine companies" would send us magazines and other "stuff" prior to patrol. Hustler, Cherry, etc, all made sure that we had movies (normal films as well as "action" films...) and on one or two occasions, there'd be snacks and certificates to buy stuff we needed. If you were married, the mags normally sent "gifts" for the wives which they enjoyed. The Navy naturally pissed and moaned about this. It started when an O-3 complained that he was reenlisting, volunteering to give his life for his nation and his reenlistment ceremony consisted of just the commanding officer shaking his hand. Hustler heard about it and within days, the O-3 was being feted with a nice ceremony complete with two or three "Hustler Honey's" for background photo opportunities. Cherry magazine caught on as did Penthouse and soon, subs all along the Atlantic Fleet were having "amazing" reenlistment ceremonies.

I saw Larry on two occasions when the Hustler Honeys had come to reenlist someone and it was a precursor of the "Hooters" phenom where everyone gathered around to get photos. Prior to all the "thank you for your service" stuff, Larry went out of his way to "thank us." I didn't think to get an autograph (after all, he was famous...) but then my attention span might have been wandering elsewhere too... The Navy tried to fight back and I remember pro-ball cheerleaders being hired/asked by the Navy to attend a ship party or two. But like all things NFL, the girls had Fort Knox security (couldn't get near 'em, let alone get a photo kiss...) and the idea soon died. Larry tho, continued his reenlistments. Last one I saw was in 1988.
