A servicemember previously covered down on a 1SG position took initiative trying to close out some documents (Awards, COAs, and other Memorandum of records) from his previous unit with no forwarding address attach to them. The documents were found by clerks before moving into a new building and didn’t know the whereabouts of the previous personnel that was assigned to the unit. Most documents were never sent because of past deployments and the change of personnel within the command didn’t leave continuity to pass off to there replacements with-in the command team. What is the best resource to locate service members that have ETS or retired from the military? The responses from former S-1 representatives is to utilize social media but other avenues of approach have been not utilized is the Veterans Affairs (VA). What are your thoughts about this situation?

They can still be uploaded to their iPerms. When they separate, there documents are still held in a reserve OMPF. When/If they ever request copies of their records, they will receive the documents that were uploaded.

Forwarding address from their 214 for physical mail. Send a post card to confirm, then push the documents. Definitely upload to iPerms, so I find they don't respond they still "get them". Installation Transition Office has the info.

The more information the better. Home state, home of record, last known address, names of family members, etc. Plug in your own information to get a feel for the site. Phone numbers are listed too. With long distance phone charges being a thing of the past, make a few calls to the numbers listed. Just be prepared for some of the to have never heard of for whom you search.

You'd be surprised what you can find about anyone using this free search tool. Don't bother paying. What you can get for free is still amazing. For example, my profile here says my name and city. Plug that information into that page and you will find all sorts of old addresses on me, and even an old girlfriend or two, they just might not be identified as such.

By the way, that site lists a Perry L Washington Jr who lived or was Stationed at Ft. Irwin, CA. Born in November of 1975 a and died in February of 2008. Hey, the site isn't perfect -- what would you expect for free? You wouldn't happen to be dead, would you? What? I once got an email from a spammer asking if I was dead. I wrote back saying I was, having been killed by a brother-in-law trying to take over my cocoa fortune. The spammer never wrote back.

I have used that web site for a while now. Mostly for locating old Army Buddies. Works about 75% of the time for me. The bad news. 75% of my friends are gone. R.I.P. Brothers.
