Fellow Master Sergeants, with our evaluations now closed out, and a new test cycle upon us, I am curious as to what the rest of the group thinks of the following post: https://www.jqpublicblog.com/msgts-epic-post-should-be-the-new-snco-charge/

I am a disciple of the "old school." The generation of SNCOs that didn't make Chief without at least one Article 15 under their belt, and who cared more about their Airmen and Mission than they did about their own education and volunteerism. The same generation that taught me that it isn't my responsibility or duty to tell the leaders above me what they want to hear, but what they need to hear. Sometimes the baby IS ugly. Sometimes there IS a problem. But have enough faith and trust in me that I know my Airmen and will get the job done...on the right terms. No cutting corners, no risking precious time, or life. We'll get it done right, because God knows we can't afford to do it twice.

My first war was Vietnam. My superiors got mad when I don't often because I got the job done just not there way. Did you greatest NCOs I can say thank you to. If anyone knows where they are I want to happen to them. Louis de where. And sergeant Cory .

MSgt Briney,

MSgt Kerry Moffit here, a 2015 retiree.

This post. YES. I served under and, eventually, alongside far too many SNCOs who were more concerned about office/organizational politics than doing the right thing. One even became my Career Field Manager but got there largely by never making a decision without carefully considering the political ramifications on their career. Another, who recently made E-8, spent (spends? - I'm retired now so I can't monitor the situation directly but do get infrequent SITREPs) most of their days walking around the building with a notepad in hand flapping their jaw at "all the right people".

I may be retired but I still feel there's no place in my USAF for political/social climbers. Do your damned job and take care of your people; because, they take care of the mission.

Amen! I know I have pissed off my fair share of folks by not playing the political game, but I fight for my Airmen, and I bust my butt to make sure we can make minor miracles happen with what little we have.

Slightly off topic and yet, not I think, is all of the senseless "box checking" for promotion. The individuals mentioned above did all of the box checking in addition to the political stuff. While I completely understand the USAF wants to have the most highly educated and well trained people, requiring members who already have either baccalaureate or advanced degrees to complete a CCAF Associates Degree is, IMO, a waste of the members time and the services' expense. While I am as yet, without degree, I nevertheless spent several years at a great university studying my craft so that I could implement my education as my profession. When I joined the USAF, there were quite a number of people in my career field without advanced degrees. Today however, you can't hardly shake a stick at the 3N1 and 3N2 career fields without smacking someone with a Masters degree and, there are quite a few now with either PhDs or DMAs. IMO, if a subject required by the USAF isn't taught in ALS, NCOA, or SNCOA and, backed up by OJT and subsequent certification at the unit level, it's not that important. That includes officers. Brand new lieutenants need to not only observe their supervisors but also find and latch onto a good SNCO and learn everything they possibly can about the USAF (and USA, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard) from the enlisted perspective and, from someone with more experience.

Sorry to get off topic..... KM
