Well anyone that's ever been in the engine room of a ship knows how easy it would be to hide.

There are actually a lot of places one can hide on a ship, but it should have never gotten to this point. PO3 (frocked) Mims asked for help. He reached out and was ignored.

Mims actually used to work for me. He wasn't a bad kid or even a lazy one. He knew his shit, but the command climate wasnt the easiest to deal with. The O-6 captain Had taken away all power from the higher enlisted and even the XO. Restricting people to the ship who asked for emotional counseling and sending individuals to the brig for minor infractions were a couple staples for his time in office.

A toxic command climate will always be covered up. This is most prominent before deployments, after deployments (families and big wigs visiting) and before major inspections. There is too much focus on how the command looks and no concern with keeping a well oiled machine running properly. It's easier to focus on one "stray" sailor than to fix the Chiefs mess or Wardroom.
