Darn, it is a waterborne force! If you wanted to stay on land you should have joined the Army. Go get it!

When I was selected for Chief I was on a Desron Staff AT SEA. After that I went to teach School at Great Lakes, then to the Senior Enlisted Academy and back to Sea. As a Senior and Master Chief my Sea-Shore Rotation was 3/3, where is the problem? What has happened that the Navy is suddenly Leadership Deficient at Sea? We are a Sea Service and need to spend our time either at sea or out of the country in Billets that look and count as sea duty once we get to the Chief Petty Officer level. I did more training and teaching once I became a Chief (note: I never said E-7) than ever before.

For those who do not understand the difference between a Chief and an E-7, it is not something that can be explained but must be experienced. Leadership in the mess makes the difference. Stop whining and get to where the need exists.

CMDCM Gene Treants - Shipmate sailors need to read Captain Abrashoff's book (http://www.gary-tomlinson.com/media/Book_Report_-_Its_Your_Ship.pdf) entitled "It's Your Ship". If Korea goes south they may be calling us anyway.

Not sure where your link went CPO Nate S. but here is a link to the book on Amazon: https://smile.amazon.com/Its-Your-Ship-Management-Techniques-ebook/dp/B001HPW9R4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid= [login to see] &sr=8-1&keywords=It%E2%80%99s+Your+Ship
It's available on Kindle - Hard or paperback plus Audio in case you are driving a car - never while driving a ship!

But I don't think it was about USS Anzio os it really wasn't about the best damn ship in the Navy! USS BENFOLD (DDG 65) is NOT even a CG so right there we know the title is not correct! (Yes I am very proud of MY Ship!)

However, Capt Abrashoff is totally correct in saying that one ship does not make a difference - and focusing UP the chain is even more important once your ship is functioning properly. THAT might have fixed the current problems in that part of the Navy as they exist now. Great leaders look all around and his experiences should be shared, as he has been doing.

CMDCM Gene Treants - Master Chief (Gene), Humm! I don't know either, but for me it was he the USS Coral Sea (CV-43 - The Ageless Warrior). We were an old ship, but under leadership Capt Allen and Capt Zia a great ship. Earned my AW their. 4 hrs with the CAG was interesting and nerve racking! Grilled me like a fish over an open fire, but I was the 1st HM in a long time to earn my wings. We did some great work on the Coral Sea.

Yes, you are correct, very correct, that great leaders - look ALL AROUND and develop every scrap of talent with a deft hand. I have the summary "book report" always available, and my copy of the book annotated, highlighted and always within arms reach in my home office!

CPO Nate S. - When I was on Anzio we had a CO (Capt Howard) who was always preaching thinking out of the box. We did as a team and came up with a lot of innovative ideas. One of his more radical ideas was keeping and wearing our utilities, which were issued in the yards as we built Anzio (precomm) for use after we left there and at sea. I found and got people the correct collar devices for our utilities and everyone wore the correct ones and belts. However, when he tried to sell tNavy on that idea he was told not only no, but hell no. A few years later, everyone went to them underway and even inport, go figure! Just one of the many ideas he and we came up with that became part of Navy over the years. Anzio is undergoing SLEP and still a great ship - TEAM!
