I was a Corporal at 19 and had my own squad in Vietnam in 1969. My Combat Unit was Bravo 1/3, 2nd Platoon, 2nd squad. Shortly after turning 20 years old, I made Sergeant and was a Platoon Leader.

It was all we knew, staying alive one freaking day at a time and watching over each others asses. It was truly a brother hood and we all knew it!

Sgt Tom Cunnally - I wasn't looking to make Sergeant brother, believe me. I was perfectly happy being a Corp., a Squad Leader. But the position became open rather suddenly and I was told by the CO that I was taking over the Platoon. That's the way things were back then in the field.

I was a NCO teenager & tried not to get too carried away with all the responsibilities.
But I had a Platoon Sergeant who took me under his wing and taught me a lot, He's 84 years old now and was in the Marines for 20 years ( 1950 - 1970), and retired as a Captain.

Were you a DI then?? You must have enlisted at 17 & made Sgt in two years which is outstanding ..I'll bet you got meritorious L/Cpl or Cpl along the way..??

No, I went to DI school as a Sgt and graduated before I was 21. I got meritorious Sgt for finishing No. 1 in NCO school that was one reason I was a Sgt so quickly.

GySgt Ascencion Gomez, D.S.L. - Where did you go to NCO School? I went to the one at Camp Lejeune. I think it was 10 days & most of it concentrated on the use of helicopters in combat... Does that seem about right??
