I always try to be as transparent as possible with orders coming down the chain. Let your soldiers know that if shit has to get done, it HAS to get done, and not just because YOU want it to be done. However, this doesn’t mean you have to explain yourself to them.

When I was coming up through the ranks, I felt like a had a few SGTs who were obsessed with their self image, and acted more in the, “ do as I say and not as I do,” mantra. Never do this. Work hard and show your team that you’ll never quit, not on them, nor yourself.

I have a few power statements that I try to lead by:

1. Preparation breeds professionalism, and professionalism enhances leadership competencies.

2. As leaders, we must never forget that we are only as good as the men and women who follow us; alone we are no more than an individual who solely possesses a vision.
