What do I say to a SPC regarding being promoted?

His concern is closing doors, he doesn't want to nix the option of more responsibility, but with everything being chaotic right now he also wants to "be conservative to not get caught up in current events"
He is a full-time electrical engineering college student civilian side - ETS is Oct 2023. He planned on going IRR and transferring to another branch due to the Army disqualifies him career-wise for being color blind.
I genuinely am at a loss for words. I have explained to him that taking the promotion is not just pinning a SGT Rank on. It is a commitment.

If school is his focus, then let it be. I would rather have a soldier that wants to stay an E4 and his goal set on completing an engineer degree than one that has no goals and will just float with the wind.

Ehhh, well an Electrical Engineering degree isn't exactly no goals, that is not an easy degree and he would be snapped up as a civilian with it in a heartbeat, if he has good grades. Plus he has the option to flip to ROTC Contracted and drop three months off his enlistment contract.

1SG Walter Craig - There's a whole lot of electrical engineering for which color vision is irrelevant. If he isn't aware of the various aspects that require color vision, he'll likely learn about them while he's getting his degree, and either not go into those areas, or learn how to compensate for his colorblindness if he does.

Basically just tell him that he needs to make a final decision. Does he want to get promoted to SGT or not? Does he want to spend the next 3 years as a SPC or spend the next 3 years as a SGT?

MSG (Join to see) Yea. I just hate that in these times, if some one declines a promotion - it could be a career ender for them. I understand why it is this way I guess it the soft said of me that feels bad.

SSG (Join to see) - It does not sound to me that he wants to be career enlisted. If similar had been brought to me while I was in the homestretch for nursing school, I would not have been interested either. Engineering and nursing are both tough and I am a far better RN that I would ever have been as a 68W (91B in my days enlisted).

1. To earn "retirement" points in the IRR, they'll need to request 30/60/90/180 day or greater assignments annually
2. If he goes "Green to Gold" sit down with AR 40-501, Chap 2-2 c.1... Evaluate medical standards for each Officer Branch under "Green to Gold"
