I'm seeing that it usually goes the other way, but I'd really like to know if going from Warrant Officer to Officer is a thing that happens, and if so, what's the process and possible reasoning?

I have seen 2 in 22 years. The first was in my OBC class in 1994. This guy was a SSG calibrator (35H then), then Electronic Maintenance Technician CW2, then became an OD officer (OCS). He retired and is now a PhD. He and I commanded the same company a few years apart. Always the smartest guy in the room. He also had wisdom and empathy. In this guys case, he reasoned that as a chief, he had to deal with soldier headaches so he might as well get the pay...I think he simply realized he could do more.

Second guy was a Marine Deck Officer (880A, boat warrant). He earned a commission through OCS and became a Transportation Officer. Later a multifunctional logistician. He just retired last year about the time I did. This poor guy actually got progressively more and more sea sick. He loved being a warrant but was eventually spending all his time barfing over the side. He was a stud logistician though. He had exceptional ability to field strip a problem. He was a truth teller and it made people uncomfortable.

I have seen it once in 25 years, a Captain reverting to CW2. He was an Aviation officer who only wanted to fly. Reverting did that.

I met two guys in aviation OBC who had been WO pilots and went to OCS to become 2LT's.

My current BN CDR reverted from MAJ to CW2 and then went back to MAJ and then made LTC. Another pilot I know went from 1LT to WO1 to CPT to MAJ to CW2.

As a Warrant in Vietnam, I was offered a direct commission to 2nd Lt. In Germany, I was offered the direct commission twice, first to 2nd Lt and secondly to 1st Lt. Three months after turning down the last offer, I was rifted out. I guess the Army was trying to tell me something and I wasn't listening.

If you're young enough, nothing's stopping you from putting in an ocs packet. Most techs are too old to OCS (28), and I don't imagine most walk-in warrants would want to transfer, or aren't otherwise eligible (degree)

When you become a WO, do you need to stay one for a certain amount of time before you can apply for OCS?
