John McCain is just another man, another object lesson in the principal I sought to teach my children and the children in my care as a Scout Leader and a Volunteer working with Youth at Risk. Never worship a hero, worship the act of heroism. There is no doubt in my mind that McCain once acted heroically and that act has been praised and acknowledged in countless ways. But McCain was just a mortal man and, like all such, he also acted in base ways. Think of the great heroes of the Bible: Moses, Noah, David, Solomon, et al. They all fell victim to their baser instincts. Name any hero of war or celebrity. Again, the same. So, as we bury John McCain, let us celebrate the good. The evil will live long after him.
