Most mistake the " three volleys" as a 21 gun Salute. The 3 volleys comes from a time of war when the dead needed to be cleared from the battlefield, each side would fire 3 volleys to signify that the dead had been cleared and taken care of. My understanding is that the 3 volleys means that our brother/sister has now been taken care of and is at rest. My Uncles flag has 3 spent shell casings from the Honor Guard.
