I opted out because the way it was explained to me was the its increasing in cost and decreasing in value the longer you live, kind of like term life insurance. From the look of it at the time I figured the only way for my spouse to get paid a decent amount was for me to die quickly and that's not an option. I am probably wrong though because it was not really explained and in all honesty I probably didn't really pay it much attention especially when they used the phrase "term life insurance". I have some decent whole life insurance I got early on in my career so I am fairly well covered in a worst case situation.

This policy is similar to that used by the private sector. It's like an insurance policy, I paid into it for decades and doing the same with my Siemens retirement. Both based on base pay at retirement with no increases.
