Engineer cross training: when possible how beneficial is it to learn from our civilian counterparts? How can we make more opportunities to to get that knowledge.
After having served for nearly two decades on AD, I’m pretty impressed with the knowledge on the Reserve side since many of these Soldiers, like myself, perform construction/engineering full time during their civilian occupation. AD Military members tend to do their job only during training missions and deployment.

Sir Seabees have been doing that for decades. The reserves mix in on there AIT, with Active Battalions and now they are even filling the Deployment missions some times half and half or the whole Battalions deploy to fill a deployment mission. You are correct in they bring more civilian skills that Active might be lacking in, even in the Tech stuff that keeps changing.

Unfortunately we can't control how the Pentagon uses the units and only combines the effort during the deployment. And even then there's some bumping of heads with some AD units and their egos thinking they're better.

1SG (Join to see) - Well, your regiment can some what, when RFF's go out for Engineering units. We had an RFF out for engineering units to go with us down to South/Central America. The reason for RFF is the Marines that were going with us, as we had lead, got redirected for the Afghanistan Build up. So we need another 40 Engineers and guess who answered and it was not the correct fit, was a Prime Beef unit from Minot North Dakota. They are not contingency or True Expeditionary Engineers they are Base type, should not be in that type of mission, RedHorse, yes but PRIMEBEEF no.
