We had an F-4 without a pilot climbing through the overcast over DaNang AFB after the pilot ejected when I was there.
It had come in with battle damage and asked for a chase plane to check it out before it landed.
The chase plane joined up and reported flames underneath it from the wing root back to the tail section ... and the next thing we heard was the emergency beacon from the pilot in his chute.
The chase plane came out on Guard to tell all aircraft in the DaNang traffic pattern to depart the traffic pattern because there was an F-4 at 2,000 feet without a pilot, climbing through the overcast.
The F-4 flew over DaNang airbase, over Monkey Mountain, and out to sea though, so we didn't need to shoot it down.
