I am convinced that in the US Self Reliant housing will become more and more desirable. I'd love to put some ideas I have into a home but CINC Home isn't having any of that.
One idea I'd like to do is build an Geo Thermal Unit. The earths temperature down over 12 ft. deep is a varies between 58 and 64 degrees, in some places there is less variation. Basically you have someone dig a 20 Ft deep hole, put in lines that will be used to pump fluid through them, bury the lines and use the earths temperature to provide the majority of your heating and cooling rather than using A/C and Heater. That could save a bunch of $$$ and pay for itself in just a few years time.

I've seen a bunch of these types of communities springing up nationwide. One makes use of a former ICBM missile field in the Midwest with deeply buried shelters housing several hundred people. Each has to pay a good bit to get into the group, and they have a list of desired skill sets. Getting in without a particular desired skill costs more, I think about $500K. But the shelter holds RV's as well as "cabins" and guarantees 25 years of support. I'm interested as well in billionaires building shelters in remote places, some even buying private islands. Wonder what is prompting this?
