100 years ago, WWI’s ‘Red Baron’ met defeat

Those planes were made of tubed frames and wooden spars, stringers, cables, flimsy rib supports, and covered with fabric you could easily poke a hole clear through with a long screwdriver. Not much protection or safety from anything. They were brave souls flying literally "by the seat of their pants".
