I went to MFO 3 with 2-327 and was in the Division when this happened. Very sad day.

SFC Norman Abbott I was in the MFO 53, 2009-2010 when I was with the Kansas Army National Guard. When the Guard took over the Mission, they pushed it out to 365 days to match the other OEF-OIF rotations. Not sure if they went back to 6 mo. rotations now.

I remember well. My first notification came on my birthday and I remember being inconsolable all day long, watching the news over and over and mourning the loss of brothers. I was 2/327th but we were ALL BROTHERS! I was a veteran by that time but stayed close to the Division and had many contacts. Even took a trooper back in 1995 using my network of contacts to get him assigned to Med. Co. (Repl) for passionate reassignment from OIF related to a horrific family assault/crime. Saw literally tons of CIB's w/stars. Desert Storm/Iraq/Afghanistan. Certainly an eyeopener to see all the combat veterans still serving and thriving. Thats the last time I was on post as a veteran/civillian. I understand now that I might not even be able to visit in lieu of definative objective. Grew up there, left in 1965 and went back in 1973 for my tour. Difficult times, the Vietnam War was over, soldiers and dogs stay off the grass! Not much in the way of training budget, so we improvised and hard-charged best we could. LTG "Gunfighter" Emerson was 18th ABN Corp. CO, and GEN(Ret) John Wickham pinned my wings on me as the 101st Cmdr. Absolutely the best days of this life so far. Life Member/Assn. but it's not the same as being Active. We who wore that SSI never, EVER, forget. "For all his subsequent Honors and Titles, only the Screaming Eagle is engraved on his headstone, as it had been on his heart" Quote from Col.(Ret) Thomas H. Taylor about his Father, GEN Maxwell D. Taylor, CDR, 101st Abn Div. WWII. "But sturdily spanning generational gaps was that shoulder patch, both dark and dashing, the eagles head, a national emblem."
