The budget crisis is directing these moves. At this time, right outside the gates of Fort Benning, GA, there are four civilian hospital systems that cannot even handle the problems of the second largest city in Georgia. If Martin Army Community Hospital were to close, this is where the military and their dependents would have to seek care. We would be forced to compete against the civilians and they have better paying insurance plans!!!!!

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL It looks like this is the same thing that civilian medical facilities are facing where the insurance companies are dictating patient care and treatment options verses what is best for the patient. It is also taking burden off of payment off of the tri care system by allowing members to choose outside insurance options. The ability to choose outside options may lead to members not having the same level of coverage which they now have because many will choose the cheapest option not considering, "What does this plan actually cover?" as we all know fine print is often not read.

During the 90's I experienced corporate managed care's penetration of the healthcare market. We referred to it as "mangled care", and it still is. Care is dictated by MBA's, accountants, and actuaries. All the risk is shifted to the client and provider.

As a former AF ER medic, I am amazed how adept medical teams and surgeons performed under triage circumstances. Saved many more than they lost. I've interviewed a # of vets for my research, going back to Korea. They are much more satisfied w/ medical care than they are behavioral health at our local VAC where I volunteer.
