I have already seen many of the series of pictures of these USMA cadets in front of one of the older USMA barracks SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. A couple pictures have hands raised with a fist with some serious while other cadets are smiling with halfhearted raised fists. One picture has crossed sabers at the back. One picture has all hands down by their sides.
My classmate Brenda Sue Fulton who is chairwoman of the academy's Board of Visitors.
We were part of the first USMA class that included women s cadets when we entered in 1976. I was prior enlisted as a combat engineer.
The academy leadership will most likely consult with the photographer who was contracted for this series of photos to determine what happened and why.
I expect that this is going to be much ado about nothing when it is resolved.
These cadets are seniors and most likely were encouraged to strike up a series of different poses for the pictures so that one or two of the better shots would be used in the Howitzer [USMA yearbook].
When I look back at the 1978, 1979 and 1980 Howitzers I see a lot of posed pictures. For the 1090 Howitzer my company of seniors cadets posed by Trophy Point in class uniforms as opposed to the full dress grey uniforms pictured here.

I was surprised to see how big a deal this was for everyone.
I don't think they really care that much at the Academy... other than needing to save face for whichever donors/generals are upset
