U.S. Immigration Legislation: 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act (McCarran-Walter Act)

Wouldn't it be interesting if, at some point during his Presidential campaign, Donald Trump asked,
"Oh, by the way, has anyone in Washington DC ever heard of the “McCarran-Walter Act Of 1952”?
It has been a law for almost 65 years.
After several terrorist incidents were carried out in the United States, Donald Trump was severely, criticized for suggesting that the U.S. should limit or temporarily suspend the immigration of certain ethnic groups, nationalities, and even people of certain religions (Muslims). The criticisms condemned such a suggestion as, among other things, being Un-American, dumb, stupid, reckless, dangerous and racist. Congressmen and Senators swore that they would never allow such legislation, and our illustrious President called such a prohibition on immigration unconstitutional.
As Gomer Pyle would say, “Well, Surprise, Surprise!” It seems that the selective immigration ban is already law and has been applied on several occasions.
Known as the McCarran-Walter Act, the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 allows for the "Suspension of entry or imposition of restrictions by the President, whenever the President finds that the entry of aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States. The President may, by proclamation, and for such a period as he shall deem necessary, may suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or non-immigrants or impose any restrictions on the entry of aliens he may deem to be appropriate."
And who do you suppose last utilized this process? Why it was Democrat President Jimmy Carter, no less than 37 years ago, in 1979, to keep Iranians out of the United States.
But he actually did more. He made ALL Iranian students, already in the United States, check in with the government. And then he deported a bunch of them. Seven thousand were found in violation of their visas, and a total of 15,000 Iranians were forced to leave the USA in 1979.
So, what say you about all of the criticism that Donald Trump received from the Democrat Senators, Representatives and the Obama Administration?
Additionally, it is important to note that the McCarran-Walter Act also requires that an “applicant for immigration must be of good moral character and in agreement with the principles of our Constitution.”
Therefore, one could surmise that since the Quran forbids Muslims to swear allegiance to the U.S. Constitution, technically, ALL Muslims should be refused immigration to OUR country.

Good read. I learned something new today. But we shouldn't be using "technicalities" to keep people out or remove people from this country. Let's use the standard of the law, because "technically" Christianity has the same provision (something about having no other gods before me, or some such).

SGT (Join to see) - Cherry picking something to make a point doesn't make it right or acceptable. You see it more now, with the prevalence of social media but it isn't new. Where I see the major difference in theistic ideologies is Christianity has had a "revelation" in their history where as Islam has yet to have one. Until there is, it will continue to live with an "old testament" type theology, no different from early Christians. Not saying there won't still be extremists cherry picking to support their closed mindedness, as evidenced by closed minded Christians.

The majority of people who have decried trumps stance on immigrants who practice the Muslim faith always lead with anti-Christian and anti-theocracy prose. They are wrong. How many active religions are practiced in this country and has a moratorium ever been set for all religions except Christianity? The answer is no and I have a lot of friends/co-workers who practice Buddhism and Hinduism and Judaism. Prudence is a trait that is needed when diplomacy fails and the Intelligence Community is actually getting intel with regard to terrorist infiltration of refuge movements. At what point does improper vetting becomes a national security hazard?

SFC (Join to see) - Christianity was just as messed up until several hundred years ago. What changed? The enlightenment and the different Protestant movements reinterpreted on what parts of the Christian religion where important and how they interact with societies as a whole. That "enlightenment" had started in parts of the Middle East but many areas seem to have regressed, particularly starting in the mid 1970s where the craziness seems to have come back with a vengeance. Now there would seem to be a toxic cocktail of poisonous ideology bringing forth the very worst of that religion. It's not all of them everywhere but there are definitely some widespread views that are toxic
