I think it's more likely that this election opened the eyes of a lot of Republicans who just voted party line. The RINO leadership provides lip service and doesn't really want change, they prefer the status quo. They like the power they've amassed with the democrat leadership.
While I'm at it, the democrat constituencies don't get a pass either, they also should open their eyes to their own party corruption. D and R leadership have lost site of representation and have became a permanent subclass who stand above the people.

If both parties conducted their internal business for the purpose of overriding their constituents, then yes I believe third parties would succeed.
To support that position, I think that Democrats will follow their current structure as they have a goal for America and the ends justify the means.
Republicans and independents are driven more by individual efforts and will not tolerate following orders from on high.

MAJ Charles Blake - There are many legal immigrants that are doing just. Unfortunately, those that do it the easy way think we owe them a living, some of the most patriotic citizens that love America completed the process set up before the left decided the process was broken.

Nothing will guarantee a 3rd party President. IMO, the only thing that will ENABLE a 3rd party President is a structural change in the primary system and the election process.
We need a runoff election. Have the early November election take place as usual, but have the electoral college replaced by a runoff between the top two vote-getters of the November election. That way, you could vote for anyone in November without feeling like it might be a throwaway vote, and everyone in the country would know that the outcome is the result of true democracy at work.

Too messy IMO. Something as important as electing a President with complete ballot integrity is worth going to the polls twice.
Seriously, if everyone had the option of voting for one of the following:
Clinton
Sanders
Trump
Cruz
Keyes
Johnson
etc.
How likely is it that we'd have a Clinton-Trump runoff? It could happen, but the runoff could also be Sanders-Keyes. It would be a far more interesting process.

SSgt Christopher Brose - Perhaps, but we currently have enough problems getting people to go to the polls even once. It's a sad state of affairs, but there it is.

SSgt Christopher Brose - Firstly, Lincoln was a third party candidate. Secondly, your electoral college voter is not mandated by law to vote what you want. So technically, the skies the limit. If all of the EC's like me, then a fifth party candidate would win.

As long as the D & R leadership run the Commission on Presidential Debates, a third party will never be viable.
