The mass killing of the bison was an economic issue as well as political issue to starve the American Indians of the central plains into submission.

We can thank a man named Scotty Philip of South Dakota for saving of the species.

A point of interest: Here in the Black Hills there are many of the animals. So many that every year they hold a round-up and cull the heard. That is something to see.

Thanks SGT (Join to see) for sharing images of hunting bison for the sake of destroying the herds.
When I was at Fort Leavenworth there was a fenced in area which had a small herd of bison there. I am glad to know the herd is still safely fenced in.
Image: Have you ever noticed the small herd of buffalo leisurely grazing on the southwest corner of the grounds of the Federal Penitentiary on Metropolitan Avenue?

Used to drive by a herd every day driving to base when I was stationed in North Dakota. Farm was pretty big so occasionally would actually see them running through the field. Impressive and this was a small herd compared to what used to roam the plains.
