I was supposed to be going to the Pentagon that morning for a meeting I had coordinated at an unspecified time SGT (Join to see). I was at home reading the Bible and praying and lost track of time on that beautiful September day.
I learned of the attacks by phone call and was told the Pentagon had been hit and nobody was allowed in so my meeting was postponed indefinitely.
Over the next couple days I discussed the situation with my wife and then I volunteered to be mobilized. Since I had medical restrictions I had to let the powers that be know that I was willing to be mobilized to support whatever needed to take place.
After I was mobilized, I learned that so many people were away from the building that day and the plane hit the least occupied section. A friend of mine was in LTG Maude's office that morning and went from E ring to the A ring bathroom where he was when the plane crashed into LTG Maude's office. He was severely burned.
At the 2002 Special Operations conference, I saw a Navy SEAL LT CDR being awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal because on 9-11-2001 he held up an I-Beam to allow the surviving members of the Navy operations center to get out.
There were many acts of heroism that day.

Thanks for letting me know your story. I was teaching high school at the time. A history teacher said that it had been hit by a plane, so I turned on the TV in the classroom. As we were watching, another plane hit the second tower. A student asked me what happened. I told him we were under attack. The entire class was somber. Several of those same students did multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I put September 11, 2001 as a modern day "equivalent" of December 7, 1941. Both events were significant not only for the United States, but both events reshape the world we live in.
