RP Members and Connection here is another great article by SSG Eric Burleson right here on RallyPoint that was published in Task and Purpose.
That said, the article today deals with the neuroscience behind why transition is so difficult. In short, it's difficult because our brains adapt to certain ways of seeing and doing things. When all of that changes, we have to readapt, and that can be very difficult.

I have been retired now from the U S Air Force for nearly 5 years and I miss it terrible, that is except for my 750 mile round trip to Guard duties. I do not miss that traveling but the military life I do!

SFC William H. - I feel your pain, SFC William H. ! I recall feeling like I wanted to leave it all when I exited active duty; I missed the life badly during my time on terminal leave; I had enlisted into the National Guard less than a week after my ETS.

Thanks COL Mikel J. Burroughs for sharing the article by [~301229SSG Eric Burleson]. I fully retired last October. Since I was a USAR officer since October 1992 transition was less difficult by the time I left the service with no recognition other than my wife's in May 2008. At the time, I had botulism and diverticulitis so I wasn't at my best.
Interestingly enough. I was brought back to brief the VCSA in October 2008 on a subject I was the Army's expert on. The brief was extended based on a white paper I wrote one evening.
I met with the VCSA and the HQDA DCS G4 accompanied me along with some DCS G-3 personnel. At the time I was prepping for colon resection surgery and relying on coffee to keep me going.
