On April 25, 1792, convicted felon Nicolas-Jacques Pelletier became the first person to be executed by the guillotine. While the guillotine became known as a ruthlessly efficient killing machine, its eponym was actually motivated by humanitarian impulses.

Being the first in anything good or bad is a novel experience SGT John " Mac " McConnell. For the second one to be executed to witness the severing of the head and the blood squirting out from veins and pulsing out from arteries must have been a shock.
Some mistakenly think the guillotine was humane. For perspective, ponder using the same needle to inject lethal medications into those to be executed. Initially it is sharp, but over time it becomes duller so that force is needed to break the skin.
The guillotine struck bone as it severed the cervical spine. the blade dulled at points and the gore was not always cleaned off so that the previous victims blood, etc. dripped on the next to be executed. The Reign of Terror was indeed a terror.
