The word Gypsy has become a pejorative especially since after World War II. The Romani people were more than likely from Northern India and were a nomadic people. They were persecuted throughout Europe because of some distinct cultural differences. This became pronounced with German laws particularly the Nuremburg laws of the Nazis. It is estimated that between Two hundred thousand and one and a half million Romani were killed by the Nazis.

Nazi concentration camp badge - Wikipedia
Nazi concentration camp badges, primarily triangles, were part of the system of identification in Nazi camps. They were used in the concentration camps in the Nazi-occupied countries to identify the reason the prisoners had been placed there.[1] The triangles were made of fabric and were sewn on jackets and trousers of the prisoners.
