It is better to make the enemy die than your own troops. Who ever says that we should have done the land invasion instead of dropping the bombs has never had friends killed or family members by the enemy. I maintain that they are talking out of their asses.

My father was aboard ship in the South Pacific when Japan finally surrendered in 1945. He (and his shipmates) were well aware of the planning for Operation Downfall and the expected casualty/mortality rates.
Many is the time we spoke about the dropping of the two atomic bombs as opposed to a land invasion of Japan. He had no doubt as to the outcome had there been an invasion. He simply told me I wouldn’t be here!
No sailor serving in the South Pacific ever doubted President Truman’s decision to drop the atom bombs.
