So...a woman who refused treatment or diagnostic methods to determine fetal viability, a case of extreme dehydration which may have been the prisoner's choice (we don't know because the full story was not given), a catastrophic accident based on a choice by one guard (the dropped prisoner). Yeah, this all seems like an epidemic of cruel and unusual punishment. (Please note that my tongue is firmly in my cheek).

HuffPo. 'Nuff said.

The pregnant woman was a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. Would you trust her to make her own decisions?

A GUARD has no business in determining the validity of a prisoner's medical problems. Lifting an inmate, purposefully dropping him, and allowing him to hit his head on the floor is not something someone does out of character. If he felt comfortable doing that, he must have felt that it was okay to do.

Kristina Fiebrink, who died in August, may have been been going through withdrawal but had a scheduled medical visit canceled because she had previously been evaluated during a prior admission. This is just plain neglect. More unqualified people making medical decisions.

After reading the article, especially the notes on the pregnant inmate, it appears that the jail staff did all they could for her. Folks die every day, for various reasons, both in and out of prison. The number of deaths in his jail is not unusual.

As for the shortage of medical staff in jail. Its a huge problem nationwide. How many folks who spent 8 years of schooling (for a MD) would want to work in a place with low pay and depressing as a jail? Not many. Its difficult to find qualified medical folks to work in both prisons and jails.

To me, this is an article about nothing. Not surprising considering the source.

PO1 Tony Holland County Sheriff is an elected position. It is local politics. This guy has taken a small time local political office and made it a national focus. Regardless of the voracity of the story, this guy should be in Milwaukee, where the people who elected him deserve to have his attention focused. He shouldn't be gallivanting off to New York to go on TV, or all of the is other stuff, unless he is on vacation. Meeting with the President Elect over a possible cabinet position is an exception. There are systemic problems across the country as jails are over crowded, under staffed, under funded, and having to deal with the shortfalls. I don't know that any of this mess. The police brutality, the disrespect for law enforcement, and the tangible hostility between police and citizens is really at a higher level than it has been in the past. It could also be that the ratio of incidents is relatively static, while the internet age has just made them more visible to wider range of people. Regardless, when a police officer is executed while sitting in their car, that is a problem. Anyone whether Law Enforcement or private citizen who breaks the law should be prosecuted. It may seem unfair, but Law Enforcement officers are held to a higher standard. If you are enforcing the law, you damned sure better not be violating it.
