Reminds me of an old saying: Old loves never die. They just go to a quieter place.
That being said, I have owned just one dog in my life, a Gordon Setter named Queenie. She was a beautiful animal. I earned her working at a kennel for hunting dogs. She was the only pay I ever received for the year I worked there. I didn't want pay. I loved working with them. But I would never refuse the puppy the owner gave me. She was poisoned (I believe by a neighbor). I never wanted another. My brother gifted me with a collie, but I didn't want it. It was the family dog, not mine. So, yes, Queenie sleeps in my heart. She's been there since I was about 14, that's 63 years ago...

CPT Jack Durish I cannot begin to know how Queenie's death affected you, when you looked at your neighbor . Well that neighbor long got their cumupines.
