SPC Kevin Ford I am not sure how far the defund the police movement plans to go but as you said, we do need police and we do need reform. Like in any occupation you have some bad people and the police are certainly no exception. I know I am ready to defend myself, my family and my property.

SFC William Farrell Right now it seems more aspirational than any type of plan. It may really be something like disbanding the current department and replacing it from the ground up with a new one that is still essentially police.
I'm not sure the "few bad apples" argument is good for the police. That has to be a profession (like airline pilots) that have a zero tolerance toward bad apples and anytime one is found it is the catalyst for major introspection and action to try and reduce to the extent humanly possible. Instead the police have taken the opposite position, a "few bad apples" has become an excuse and reason not to change anything.

SPC Kevin Ford - There have been what, less than ten questionable encounters between police and citizens who were Black and ended up seriously injured or dead. There have been thousands of encounters. At this point, you can go with what we have now, which is punishment of people (including police) who break the law, or you can go with no law enforcement. If you want to go with anarchy, well, I won't survive it for a year, since the inevitable breakdown of supply chains for medicine and such leaves me with less than six months of the stuff that keeps me alive... but I would still outlive a few thousand of the people from the area where they want to abolish the PD who don't have the means or the skills to protect themselves.
The good news, I guess, is that the plan calls for a response in cases of things like Spousal Abuse, domestic quarrels, etc. The bad news is that the response would be sending out social workers and depending on groups like BLM for vigilante actions.

Hopefully, they know much more about this than do I. To me, this seems short sighted
