Josh Hawley is lone senator to oppose bipartisan anti-Asian hate crimes bill

The US Senate has overwhelmingly passed an anti-hate crimes bill on Tuesday that was created to address the surge of attacks against Asian Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The vote was 94-1 in favour of the bill, with Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri the lone senator to oppose the measure. It will now get voted on in the House of Representatives before reaching President Joe Biden’s desk.
In a statement sent to The Independent, Mr Hawley said: “It’s too broad. As a former prosecutor, my view is it’s dangerous to simply give the federal government open-ended authority to define a whole new class of federal hate crime incidents.”

There's a long history of bi-partisan bills which later turned out to be not-such-good ideas, so I tend to pay attention when a senator is willing to be a lone contrarian. Doubly so when its a former prosecutor saying that something offers too much leeway to prosecute.
