I x-rayed a man who had swallowed about a half pound of assorted nuts, bolts, screws, etc. He came to the ER complaining of stomach pains but did not disclose what he had eaten. Imagine my surprise when I saw the film.

Almost as crazy as the one who actually hammered several nails into his own head. We couldn't believe that one either til we saw the x-rays.

It was not unusual to be called in to anesthetize a prisoner who had swallowed a razor blade. We would have to do an esophagoscopy to make sure it wasn't still in the stomach. The prisoner would get a few days in the hospital with hospital meals, then back to prison.
I failed to mention, the prisoners were always very careful, the edges of the blade were always taped. When they are x-rayed, the tape doesn't show, only the metallic blade. They just wanted a vacation from the prison.
