Okay as an infantryman I non-concur with the assessment that these 7 types of NCOs are present in any US Army infantry platoon SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL
First each infantry platoon should have a platoon sergeant and squad leaders who are NCOs. Team leaders may well be NCOs but for various reasons many infantry platoons have less than seven NCOs.
It is ludicrous IMHO that anybody would think that all of the following type of caricatures of soldiers would be in any platoon:
1. Smokey: Angry, sadistic, and maybe just a little bit of a psychopath,
2. Big Sarge:
3. Hollywood: Hollywood often gets mistaken for an officer. His hair is great. His teeth are pristine. He looks like he was born on a giant pile of money.
4. Salty Dog:
5. Uncle Sham: The transition from lower enlisted service member to NCO is not an easy one.
6. Fast Track:
7. High-n-Tight
I have the utmost respect for the NCOs I served with over the decades. In a couple cases I had to discipline a couple NCOs but that worked out well in both cases.
Kudos to the US Army NCOs!

Your Drill SGT, leaves the trail and becomes your Platoon SGT. I swear "Da Dirty Third" was the best!

These same identities exist in the civilian world, just called by different titles. Get used to it. From one that made a career in both settings.
