I have seen some of the container trains going through New Mexico. The containers are stacked two-high, and some of the trains are several miles long.

Yes the limit now with distributed locomotive power is pretty high but not unusual to see 2-3 mile long trains. The long ago limit used to be 1 mile as that is as long as the compressed air for the brakes could flow from the head end locomotives without needing a booster charge. Now, however they can control locomotives distributed through the train from the front and keep the brake line pressure charged to the appropriate level as well as assist with the physics of pulling a long train over varying topography. Fairly recent technical development from about 10-12 years ago.
