This is an old article from Sept. However, I have been doing some reading and research on this. Do you know they load these containers on a train, the railroad takes them to Chicago and instead of transferring the ones bound for NY by rail, they offload them, put them on a truck, take them to a Chicago to NY rail loading ramp on the other side of Chicago and reload them again for NY and points East. How stupid and inefficient is that? Sort the containers by destination in LA, then interchange the NY containers in Chicago by rail as soon as they arrive. No clue why they do it the stupid way. I am sure there is a reason but the Federal Government can cleanup that mess in Chicago as well.

I have seen some of the container trains going through New Mexico. The containers are stacked two-high, and some of the trains are several miles long.

Yes the limit now with distributed locomotive power is pretty high but not unusual to see 2-3 mile long trains. The long ago limit used to be 1 mile as that is as long as the compressed air for the brakes could flow from the head end locomotives without needing a booster charge. Now, however they can control locomotives distributed through the train from the front and keep the brake line pressure charged to the appropriate level as well as assist with the physics of pulling a long train over varying topography. Fairly recent technical development from about 10-12 years ago.
