When I first became interested in ancient history what we could learn about it when we had no writing was from stonework, art, architecture, and language. There has been so much more learned about the ancient history of North and South America so much later than elsewhere in the world, with a lot still to be uncovered (literally) - many mysteries to unravel still on our side of both ponds.
Articles like this that remind us how folks live today can still tell us a lot about the ancient history of places in some ways, especially when we learn what is traditional about a people's culture, like vestiture, food and the way it is prepared, medicinal herbs and treatments, music, language of course (if we learn it), and as the article tells us - clearly agricultural practices also.

The single best course I took in graduate school was Economic Geography taught by a geographer. He set out the rationales of where people settled and thrived based on intrinsic geographic factors like terrain, water, can access, etc. It gave me a new appreciation for geography versus Boy Scout map reading and memorization of place names.
