KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed victory in the strategic city of Mariupol on Thursday, even as he ordered his troops not to risk more losses by storming the last pocket of Ukrainian resistance in the war’s iconic battleground.
Russian troops have besieged the southeastern port city since the early days of the conflict and largely reduced it to ruins. Top officials have repeatedly claimed it was about to fall, but Ukrainian forces have stubbornly held on in the face of overwhelming odds. In recent weeks, they holed up in a sprawling steel plant, as Russian forces pounded the industrial site and repeatedly issued ultimatums ordering their surrender.

If we've learned nothing else from this war it's to pay no attention to Putins claims. He is the one who claimed his Navy was so inept that it set fire to their own ship afterall.

In my view, SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL, this is another of Vladimir Putin's tactics... I don't believe that the Ukrainians would let this key city fall into Russia's hands...but I guess we shall see how it all plays out... Excellent share, my friend...

Tactically speaking, why storm it? Blockade it and starve them out. It makes sense.

Thus far his troops have shown they're incapable of blocading anything.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - it may prove to be a problem resupplying the hold outs. During the battle of Stalingrad, Germans had reduced Russian forces to a stretch of beach on the Volga river. Not a bright idea to leave the enemy a strong hold behind lines.
