To survive the Depression you had to be tough. When I was about 12, Mom was, unbeknownst to us, apparently watching us from the living room window. I say that because I had gotten into a dispute with a kid 2 years older than me who lived around the corner. He apparently went home and told his older brother who decided to even things up. He was about 6 feet tall and 170 pounds. I was the littlest kid in the neighborhood for my age. He came up to me and punched me. Mom, seeing this, immediately came flying out the front door yelling at the kid that she was going to teach him a lesson. He bolted. It was quite a sight watching Mom, just a shade over 5 feet tall, chasing this big kid down the block. He was faster than her and the gap kept getting larger. She chased him to the corner of Butler and Division before she stopped. I’m betting he is still running. Mom could be fierce when it came to defending her family. Mom could have used that speed
