The use of the iconic form of identification has its roots in the Civil War.
Some of you, I'm sure know the dog tag history, but I didn't and some members may not either. We've come a long way in our bodies being able to be identified. You'll see what I mean.

My dads still had the notch cut in them. He use to tell me and I don't know how true this is that when a solder died they took on tag and placed the other one in the teeth but that the Germans figured out some did that to try and fool them so they would go along kicking the chins to see if the person was really dead.
