A terrible time for our nation and humanity.
I can recall visiting my Dad's uncle in Oklahoma in 1949. My Dad, his uncle, and I went into this small town. It had muddy streets and wooden sidewalks. As we walked along the sidewalk headed to a general store, a couple of black gentlemen were walking toward us. The men stepped off the sidewalk into the mud, bowing their heads and tipping their hats, saying "Morning Mr. Brown, sir." They were ankle deep in mud. My Great Uncle ignored them. Later he explained; "It ain't proper for a white man to speak to them coloreds in public. If you do, they may start thinking they are as good as us. Can't have that."
I was only 6 at the time, but that blew my mind. I have never forgotten it.
