8 people cannot be champions. It sounds about right for this age though. Let's not crown a winner, let's give all 8 a trophy and say they all won.

It's crazy that they ran out of challenging words for these youths.

By some counts there are 171,476 words in current use, and 47,156 obsolete words along with about 9,500 derivative words included as subentries. They could have found more words, upped the skill level etc. Clearly these kids are all great spellers but one of them deserved the chance to win the competition.
