I am more interested as to why they are on the phone. I don't remember getting a phone call when I first got to Parris Island. Hell, I was in bootcamp for Christmas and while we did get a phone call for that day, it was only for 3 minutes. Then we did the "Island Hopping Campaign" anyone who went to PI knows what that is----Hit all the sandpits on base while getting PT'd into the ground. I remember what the SDI said while we did it "Merry Christmas bitches!"

LCpl Shane Couch - That must be a new thing. We didn't get that back in '97.

Cpl Tom Surdi we didn't get a phone call on Christmas, but we did get to call home a few weeks before graduation to advise our family members about our graduation. I was in boot during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. We graduated the first week of January '99.

Don't know about the Marine Corps, but Army Recruits get one phone call, less than a minute to simply say "I made it here OK". They aren't even allowed to say what unit they are in. You get a post card about a week later with their mailing address.

LCpl Shane Couch - Shane I went to Army basic training, and I am pretty sure I went to the last easy class. Anyway we did not get a phone call until AIT was almost over.

You have to admire the intestinal fortitude of this young man, because you know his recruiter told him to shave that crap off before he shipped! LOL

Nobody gets that far in the process without knowing why they're there. That young man is like every other young man about to lose his hair, and for all we know, he had that hair and that shirt specifically to make a statement to himself about the life he's leaving behind and the one he is entering. It may be a funny picture, but that article was pathetic.

PO3 Bob McCord - I sent my above post to the author of that article, and got a response.

"CJ,
I know. I talked to his uncle about the back story, who told me he enjoyed the article you are referring to. I'm still amused by the picture, and thanks for your comments about the pathetic article. Thank you for your service and go f**k yourself.
PS Szoldra, Sgt, USMC (DD-214)"

I got a chuckle out of that. (I substituted the asterisks.) I said my piece, he said his piece, and that's fine. I don't think he's as funny as he thinks he is though.
