The unspoken truth about Social Security is that were a person to come up with a similar plan it would be called a Ponzi Scheme and he/she would be arrested for fraud.

Had I been able to invest the money I and my employer put into SS (about 15% of my salary). I would have ended with a lot more than the money SS will pay me when I retire.
I know there are some that would rather send money to DC and let them dole it back out to you after being poorly managed and with very little net return to you.
There should be move where those comfortable with managing investments being able to manage their SS contributions in an IRA type account. Not all will want to do that and that is fine too.
The entire system is built on current workers funding retirees and that is really hard to sustain as working populations change and as fewer people actual contribute much to SS. Look at workforce participation rates. 95 million not contributing today.
