Finding a good MRE shouldn’t be a game of chance. It’s time to start choosing the right ones.
For troops operating beyond the borders of large bases and installations, there are few constants, but one of them is that most of what you eat will come from a bag in the form of Meals Ready-To-Eat, or MREs.
If you’re living rough, you may be eating two a day, so knowing which ones are worth your time is important.
From 2009 to 2010, I was a combat correspondent, attached to 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, bouncing around Marjah in Helmand province, Afghanistan, and fast realizing what grunts have long known: There are good and bad MREs and right and wrong ways to eat them.

COL Mikel Burroughs - Most of the new ones they have come up with suck! sausage and gravy is the worst thing that I think I have ever tasted in my entire Military career!

Great post-without Tabasco sauce I would have died in the field at TBS, where we spent so much time in six months learning our infantry platoon commander tactics. Also when I was an 18 year old kid in my first summer session of Marine Corps OCS at Camp Upshur, Quantico, VA, we still had the Vietnam Era Rations in a can, and we slept in World War Two era Quonset Huts as our barrracks. The Vietnam Era NCO instructors, showed us how to eat the Ham and Eggs in a can with a liberal dousing of Salt. The Fudge Brownies in a can were actually quite good. There was a complete skill set in learning how to prepare and heat the Vietnam Era Rations in the field.
