Train stations are tiny for a country that size and notice that most of the passengers getting off at Hue are Caucasion NOT Asian. Which along with the length of the train tells me it is primarily a tourist operation.......not necessarily an operation for the locals.

Get tickets ahead of time. Last time I was in Vietnam this January we wanted to go to Hue near Tet holiday and about 4 days ahead of weekend there were no tickets left from Hanoi on train, so we flew to DaNang then bused to Hue, and later flew Hue to Hanoi.
We will be back in a couple years as my wife is teaching Occupational Therapy in Vietnam's first training of Physical therapists in Occupational therapy, which she did Dec-Jan (Hai Duong), and they are hoping she can come back to supervise and mentor these kinds of students who otherwise would be in danger of getting lectures, but no first hand supervised experience. We would love to ride the train Hanoi-Saigon.
